Awards that matter

Praise be to those that give…

In the village last week, I was watched the people come together to honour nine outstanding leaders in the Hartley Wintney volunteering community with attending families, joined by councillors, staff and the local MP in celebration of their work.

The local Hartley Arts Group was one of the recipients for their dedicated service to local plays productions, and the arts, or business owners who’d bounced back from adversary to keep essential business open through the flooding. There was also the special award in memorandum to former Executive clerk, Pat Vaughan's 25 years’ service, for which The Rotary Club were awarded the hand-crafted Oak cup, in recognition of the great work they do all year round,

With a packed Lucy Pygott Centre, a tear or two was shed as well-deserved medals were received, pictures were taken for prosperity and modest recipients offered speeches to a grateful crowd. A Special mention to Roger Robertson, born and breed in the village, who has given most of his life to the council and community and shed a tear when he reluctantly received his award.

Meanwhile, “I’m sure there are just as deserving people out there,” Howard Robinson modestly proclaimed while receiving his well-deserved recognition for the work running successful athletics and running club, as well as running the girls football team for over 16 years. Howard’s modesty was typical of all those who deserved the heart-felt efforts of the council and community to come together and say thanks.

In this small part of the land, a great event took place. Not just a great party but the celebration by the community that keeps our volunteers inspired to volunteer.
