Flash fiction from an article remembered...

Upon re-joining his busy co-workers, Sloth will be alert to avoid customers and find a menial task to keep him seemingly occupied until a co-worker asks for assistance or the foreman arrives. Sloth’s favourite menial task is sweeping up. Not a serious attempt to clear up the mess pickers and packers leave behind in the isles, but a slow-motion, small movements of the broom, producing small piles of dust a few feet apart, that can be slowly swept up with a pan and brush. No more than a couple of sweeps before he can stand still for a few precious moments, looking about and prolonging the task.

If the Sloth is spotted by a co-worker and called to assist, Sloth will slowly put the brush aside, stand still and give lingering look to the co-worker with a wagging head, denoting it wasn’t possible to hear the command before taking off the gloves and waiting for the co-worker to come closer to reiterate the command, taking up valuable moments to stand still.

“Can you help this customer, over at the gates?”

“Which one…?” Sloth will slowly ask, looking the opposite way.

“The only one at the gates…!”

“…Do you know what he wants?” Sloth will ask, adding valuable seconds to the event.

“…Of course, not…!”

A moment or two will be spent explaining which one, then Sloth can slowly pull gloves back on, then meander over to the customer. When arrived, the Sloth will stand still and wait for the customer to ask for help, before, slowly asking the customer if they need help.

“Here’s my ticket… I’ve been waiting for ten minutes…!”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” the Sloth will disingenuously spout, proceeding to waste more time examining the ticket and reading every line, gaining precious moments standing still.
