My local village Christmas market was a success

From 2pm to 7pm the main A30 traffic was restricted along the high street or redirected round the town for this one-off special event of the years for Hartley Wintney Christmas market, bringing out all the locals and other communities to sample our uniquely English village community.

Stalls were busy before the official start and the high street soon thronged with Friday families, sampling the many offerings of food to local crafts. All stalls were local enterprises, promoting the best of local products and arts, from honey to hats, these local merchants were given a boost of support.

Many of the local businesses sported their own street decorations, to the wonderment o9f the many children and old alike. Crazy Jenny’s fortune telling was popular, or dropping in to Santa’s grotto to see what the wee uns are hoping for, and all the fun fair rides to keep people walking round the historic village, draped in lights and accompanied by great festive music.

Talking of music, the green oaks Federation School Choir were entertaining from 4pm onwards at the Lit tree near Fleet Road so a chance to hear their seasonal cheer that’s become a hallmark of the event. With an appetite to tend, there were many delicious hot foods and drinks on offer and business was brisk for all stalls.

At ten minutes to six, I took my place on the side of the common to help marshal the spectacular return of the fireworks display. Exited young and old were held back by family members as the ten minutes of colourful crescendo filled the village sky before us.

So, why is it important that you attend this Friday, beyond the entertainment on offer?

Firstly, the most significant advantage is the boost it provides to the local economy. Small businesses, artisans, and food producers gain a valuable opportunity to showcase and sell their products to both residents and visiting shoppers. This increased foot traffic can create vital seasonal revenue and raise awareness of local enterprises that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Our Christmas market strengthens the community spirit with a shared space, villagers can gather, celebrate, and reconnect during a busy time of year. Traditional music, locally made decorations, and local customs help create a welcoming atmosphere that fosters a sense of belonging to a cherished annual tradition for our village identity.

A great Christmas market helps attract visitors outside the community, promoting the village as a destination to support local cafés, pubs, and accommodation providers, while giving the village visibility that may lead to future visits throughout the year.

Finally, the event provides meaningful opportunities for volunteers, schools, clubs, and community groups to participate. Whether through performances, craft stalls, or charity fundraising, the market encourages collaboration and builds pride in the community’s collective efforts.

In essence, a Hartley Wintney Christmas market is far more than a seasonal event but a catalyst for economic vitality, social interaction, local pride, and long-lasting community connection.

Apart from a few drops of rain, it never fully rained and the clouds opened to reveal a perfect moon-light night for the fireworks.

Merry Christmas and a happy 2026 to you all.
